The earth thus removed was used in carrying forward two other greatimprovements, — the one to enlarge the facilities for rapid and economicaltransaction of business, the other to convert a low, swampy, and unhealthyneighborhood into a dry and well-drained district, — the grading of the mar-ginal Atlantic Avenue and the raising of the Suffolk Street district. 70 BOSTON ILLUSTRATED.
