A wet, sap-covered Tinder Conk mushroom, Fomes fomentarius, growing on a live red birch tree, in the mountains along Threemile Creek, west of Troy, Montana. This mushroom is also referred to by the common names of Tinder Polypore, Tinder fungus, Hoof Fungus. Past scientific synonyms include Boletus fomentarius, Agaricus fomentarius, Pyropolyporus fomentarius, Fomes subzonatus, Polyporus populinus, Fomes niveus, Fomes albescens, and at least 20 others.
