Remains of a W H Bailey hot air engine at the site of a former sugar factory at Arnos Vale, Plymouth, Tobago.

This hot air engine at the Arnos Vale Waterwheel site on Tobago was built by W H Bailey & Co, Albion Works, Salford, Manchester, England, It would have been built in the 1880s and probably used to pump water which was a common use for these engines. The small cylinder at the side of the engine appears to be a pump. Engines were available between 1/4 and 3 horse power. A brick furnace would have surrounded the large cylinder and fuel would almost certainly been wood. At the same site is a large waterwheel made in Glasgow, a steam engine and boiler, sugar cane crushing rollers and the large pans or coopers in which the juice was boiled.
