The 36-gun frigate Alliance fought in the American Revolution for the colonists. This 1902 illustration accompanies an excerpt from American author James Fenimore Cooper's The Pilot, credited as the first genuine sea story ever written. On a secret mission to pick up a pilot in Northumberland, in northeastern England, the Alliance meets storms and comes under fire. Here it is seen escaping capture. Accompanying the alliance was the schooner Ariel.
