Francois Laurent, Marquis d'Arlandes (1742-1809), French balloonist. D'Arlandes took part in the first manned free flight in a hot air balloon. Earlier flights were either tethered or not manned. D'Arlandes and Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier ascended from a chateau on the edge of Paris, in the presence of the King, and travelled around 6 kilometres, taking 25 minutes to complete their journey. Artwork published in 1784.
