The USS Monterey, seen here moored in Cape Town Harbour, which accompanied the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt on a visit to South Africa in October 2008, is a modern Navy guided missile cruiser, which performs primarily in a battle force role. These Cruisers CG are multi-mission surface combatants capable of supporting carrier battle groups, amphibious forces, or of operating independently and as flagships of surface action groups. Cruisers CG are equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles.
