Carving on the side of The Leaning Tower of Pisa. The ships indicate both the powerful sea-going nature of the Medieval Pisans.

The two ships carved on the outside of the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa are symbolic of the power and wealth derived for the city from its sea power. The city's seapower declined due to two major events, the defeat at sea by their rivals the Genoese in 1284 and the subsequent silting up of their harbour. How many of todays vast number of visitors take the time to look carefully at the outside of the tower and the story its carving tells?
