Escherichia coli. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of Escherichia coli bacteria, a Gram- negative, rod-shaped bacillus. E. coli belong to the Enterobactericeae group of bacteria. They are found in the gut flora of humans and warm blooded animals. Some strains are pathogenic. They have been implicated in infant gastro- enteritis and can cause meningitis in new born infants. Some strains produce enterotoxins and cause 'traveller's diarrhoea' in adults. E. coli can cause urinary tract infections and are resistant to some antibiotics (antibacterial drugs).
