Overview Sydney Harbour Opera


Port Jackson encompasses Sydney Harbour and is the natural harbour of Sydney,Australia. It is the location of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. It is also the location of the first European settlement in Australia. The first recorded European sighting of Sydney Harbour was by Lt James Cook in 1770 who named the inlet Port Jackson in honour of Sir George Jackson who was an Admiralty secretary. Governor Arthur Phillip then arrived eighteen years later and on 26th January 1788 established the first colony in Australia. This was to become the city of Sydney.
