If carnations had been 5 and 10 cents apiece, scarcely anyone would have wanted them, but when anyone called attention to the shortage of this crop, especially after the hail storm the Sun- day before, and the consequent higher prices, there was heavy baying. The carnation sentiment was strong and that was the note on which the papers based their charge of profiteering, but it was unfair, because carnations were really the small end of the business this year. This was of necessity, be- cause the local crop was cut to one- fifth of normal by the hail and the shipped stock was a loss to a great extent. Some of the florists did not sell a carnation on the floor Saturday, May 8. They saved a few from the clean-up Friday for telegraph orders. Spring flowers and plants were heavy sellers. As usual, the day called for medium- priced orders, from $5 to $7 being the average sale. Of course there were many smaller orders and some larger, but these prices told the story for the majority. The Pinehurst Floral Co. had ten times as many orders for carnations as at Easter and one-third the quantity. The Easter cut was 30,000. During th« week of May 3 they cut 10,000 and May 7 they had orders for 11,000. J. C. Steinhauser, Pittsburg, Kan., and Ealph Ward, Lawrence, Kan., were recent visitors. Clifford Pruner and
