Sun, False-Color Radio

This image of the Sun was made with the Very Large Array radio telescope. This is a false color image. The bright spots on this image show where the brightest radio waves come from. These bright spots show the location of sun spots. The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is almost perfectly spherical and consists of hot plasma interwoven with magnetic fields. It has a diameter of about 865,374 miles, around 109 times that of Earth, and its mass ( kilograms, approximately 330,000 times the mass of Earth) accounts for about of the total mass of the Solar System.
