New York, June 11, 1869,the son of Marshal and Prudence( Dyckman) Hale. He is almost alife-long resident of this State, com-ing to California with his parentsin 1873. Thev settled in San Jose,wliere Mr. Hale attended the publicschools and later the University ofthe Pacific, graduating wdth the de-gree of B. S. in 1890. ^ He became associated with hisbrothers and father in the generalmerchandise business established by the latter in San Jose, and whichwas the foundation for what is now one of the largest mercantileenterprises of its kind in the AA^est.
