Kirche am Meer / Church by the Sea, Schillig, Germany. Architect: Koenigs Architekten, 2012. Base plinth with covered entrance a

In Schillig, just fifty metres behind the dyke which protects the land from the rough North Sea, the Catholic church held a competition to design a church whose external physical robustness and solidity dissolves when you step inside. »The aim was to combine the robustness and weight of the dark bricks with the dynamism and lightness of the curved design,« explain the architects, who have experience in the construction and redesign of churches. »The materials change for the interior, with the space providing the transcendental experience strived for by concentrating on what is important.«
