Sir John Maccuswell or nowadays Maxwell built the old castle in 1220 and his son Herbert built this one about 50 years later. Caerlaverock Castle is one of Scotland's great medieval fortresses. Its close proximity to England meant it has been besieged and captured on numerous occassions. Two main events were the siege in July 1300 by Edward 1 of England who was involved in person. Then again in 1640 when Charles I was on the throne.
