ExoMars is a key component of a mission by ESA's Aurora programme to study the biological environment on Mars. The rover, ESA's field biologist on Mars, will be capable of operating autonomously by using onboard software. Included in its approximately 40kg exobiology payload, dubbed Pasteur, will be a lightweight drilling system, a sampling and handling device, and a set of scientific instruments to search for signs of past or present life. The mission is scheduled for launch in 2011, arriving at the planet's surface in June 2013.
