Salivary gland removal scar on the neck of a 59 year old woman. The parotid salivary glands were surgically removed (parotidectomy) in order to excise a pleomorphic adenoma, a type of benign (harmless) tumour. Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common type of salivary gland tumour. Although it is harmless, it can grow to large proportions, hindering jaw function, and may turn malignant (cancerous) if left untreated.
