Animal castration : a book for the use of students and practitioners . otal In-cision; 14, End of Right Scrotal Incision; 15, Knife; 16, Right Hand. Proceed as follows: With left hand (9) grasp sheath (10)and with forward and upward traction stretch the scrotum tothe extent of making it taut. AVith knife (15) in right hand (16)begin left incision (11-12) well forward on scrotum (10) and ex-tending backward for 31/2 to 4 inches. The right incision (13-14) Animal Castration 41 is made likewise. These incisions should be parallel to each other,three-fourths inch on each side of the raphe or median lineand parallel to it. The object of drawing the scrotum upwards is to form a cavitybetween the skin and subcutaneous connective tissue of scrotumabove and the scrotal plesus of veins below. This cavity or spaceprotects the scrotal plexus of veins from being knicked by pointof the knife while the incisions are being made. Release hold onsheath and grasp each testicle in turn and with a knick of theknife open the tunica vaginalis and allow the testicles to Fig. 27—Castrating the Colt. 17, Left Hand; IS, Testicle; 19, Spermatic Cord,20, Tunica Vaginalis; 21, Scrotum; 22, Emasculator; 23, Right Hand. 42 AXIMAL CASrKATlON The next step is to grasp the left testicle (18, Fig. 27) withthe left hand (17) and draw testicle upwards—at direct rightangles to the animal—at the same time producing from one totwo pounds traction on the cord. With the right hand (23) applythe emasculator (22) to the cord (19) and force instrument welldown against the scrotum (21) in such a manner as to severthe spermatic cord and all of its coverings as close to the skinincision as possible. The right testicle is removed in like mannerand the animal released. By reference to Fig. 16, page 24. thereader may observe the exact position of the emasculator on thecord and what structures are severed in operating. After Care and Treatment—Same as stallion.
