Oleander stem. Light micrograph of a cross-section through the stem of an oleander (Nerium oleander) tree. The outer cortex (red) is made of collenchyma and the lower cortex has a ring of bundles of phloem fibres (pale yellow) among which is phloem with sieve tubes (dark red). Under the phloem is a ring of cambium (dark red) and under this a thick ring of wood (yellow and pink). The solid pith (centre, red) is composed of large parenchyma cells. Magnification: x11 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
