A5 road west of Menai Bridge (Porthaethwy) with brown tourist "Historic Route Llwybr Hanesyddol" sign and view of Menai Strait and Snowdonia mountains in distance Isle of Anglesey North Wales UK. The A5 road was designed in the early 19th century by the great civil engineer Thomas Telford - it was completed in 1826 when his Menai Suspension Bridge was finished. It was the route from London to Holyhead, a major departure point and port for Ireland and was able to allow stagecoaches and Royal Mail coaches to carry post the length of the route.
