For an improvement on this beobtained a patent in July, 1865, and , 1857, and the same was extended forseven yeare, July, 1870. He defended thispatent in the United States Courts, andwas successful at the end of twelve yearsby a decree of the Court in his favoragainst forty-six manufacturing corpora-tions of New England, whom he sued forinfringement upon his patent. The valueof the patent to manufacturers was great;and during the life of the patent they hadrealized a profit of many million dollars. In 1858 he invented the WoodmanPower and
