A walker enjoys the scenery along a Madeira levada

The levadas (small canals or leats) can be found all over Madeira and carry water from the mountains to villages and towns. They follow contours and slope gently and so are ideal for walking. They sometimes cling to the side of high valleys and can be a little scary. They also go through small tunnels where a torch and bending are required. This levada is below the town of Camacha and the view looks south to the Atlantic.
