The Downham Way, through the middle of the Downham Estate in South London

Development was started on the Downham Estate by the contractor Holland and Cubitt in 1924. The London County Council had planned the estate as part of the 'Homes Fit For Heroes' programme for some time before that. The main part of over 6,000 houses, was completed by the summer of 1930, and an additional 1,038 houses were added in 1937. The estate was regarded as a showpiece 'cottage Estate' when first built and was described then as a 'Garden City'. Downham Way is the main axis of the estate.
