At twenty he was teach-ing public school, which profession he followed for severalyears, being principal of Kenton, Delaware, schools 1894-1895, and principal of Newark, Del., schools for severalyears. After graduating from the public schools he enteredWashington College, Maryland, but withdrew to teach sev-eral years. Later he entered Delaware College, but answer-ing his countrys call in 1898, he enlisted as a private inFirst Delaware Regiment, thus delaying his graduation until1901. At the close of the war he was honorably dischargedwith the rank of quartermasters sergeant. During thesession of the General Assembly of Delaware in 1899 was Reading Clerk of the Senate. He ha
