It was through his officialinfluence that the Annapolis Naval .-Vcademy wasestablished. He issued the famous orders to takepossession of California in the event of war withMexico, and (whiie acting as Secretary of War/rt?/(•w.) he ordered CJeneral Taylor to cross the NuecesRiver into the disputed Texan territory and thusbegin the Mexican War. In 1846 he was sent asminister to the court of St. Jamess; in 1S67, to Prus-sia; in 1868, to the North German Confederation;. 342 BANCROFT —BAND-FISH in 1871, to the new German Empire, whence hewas recalled three years later, at his own participated in the settlement of the Northwest-ern boundary dispute, and in the treaty concerningexpatriation rights with Germany, which providedthat citizens of either country naturalized in theother should, after five years residence, be acceptedas citizens of the state thus chosen. Great Britainafterwards subscribed to this treaty. Mr. Bancroftsgreatest work was that of the historian. In 1834he began the publication of his History of the UnitedStates. It opens with the discovery of America byColumbus, and chronicles events down to the closeof the Revolutionary War and the formation of theconstitution.
