Afghan desert storms, space shuttle image. This region is the upper Amu Darya Valley on Afghanistan's northern border. The terrain consists of arid desert plains and mountains (lower left). Darker areas (across bottom and across top) indicate the presence of water and cultivated areas. Clouds (white) are also seen across top. The main feature is a many-kilometres-long dust storm front (centre) where strong winds have thrown dust (brown) into the air. Each individual dust storm within the front is topped by a small cumulus cloud. Photographed by an STS-106 crew member on board the Space Shuttle Atlantis, on 11 September 2000.
