A modern switchboard is shown in Fig. 58. This is sup-plied either with the direct resistance or with the motorconverter. When the motor converter is employed themotor is fitted for use as an operating-room lathe and thusanswers a double Mouth lamp from main. Electric Hot-air Syringe.—This usually consists of aplatinum coil fitted inside a glass tube, protected by ametal sheath which is perforated, to admit of the coil beingseen, so that the current can be adjusted to produce theproper degree of heat. The syringe is adapted for use withcompressed air. The electric current and air supply areswitched on or off by a single movement of the switchwhich is fitted in the handle. The current required forworking it is (i volts and from 4 to 6 amperes. A syringe is made which can be worked without anyresistance direct from any current of high electro-motive FOOT WARMER 133 force. A separate switch with a valve controls the currentand air supply. The current, which is only in circuit forabout half a minute at a time, generates sufficient heat inthe coil for three or four minutes use. Electric Sterilizer and Hot-water Apparatus. — A form ofsterilizer consists of a water container made of brass whichis pressed from one piece,
