As an author he is known for his frankand charming Autobiography, which appeared in1890. In 1895 he published for the first time thewords of Rip Van Winkle. It is not easy for one who knows Jefferson,writes one of his old friends, to write of his workwithout referring to the rare beauty and gentle-ness of his character as a man ; and his book re-calls his personal characteristics at every varied career of the actor and the ripe ex-periences of the man of the world are told withthat frankness and purity of youth which he haspreserved through life.
