In 1S59 he went to Pittsfield and engaged BOSTON OF TO-DAY. 219 in the insurance business, giving his chief attentionto fire insurance. Among other companies whichhe at that time represented was the MassachusettsMutual Life Insurance Company. With this com-[xiny, in the course of a few years, he became in-timately associated. In 1868 he was made generalsuperintendent of its agencies; in 1882 he was. MARTIN V. B. EDGERLY. chosen a director in the company; in 1884, secondvice-president; in 1885, vice-president; and in1886, president, which position he at present remained in Pittsfield until 1863, when he re-turned to Manchester for a wider field. There hemade his headquarters until 1883. In that yearhe moved to Massachusetts ; and since his electionto the presidency of the Massachusetts Mutual Lifehe has resided in Springfield. While a resident ofNew Hampshire he served in Manchester as direc-tor of the City National Bank, the New HampshireFire Insurance Company, the Suncook Valley andthe Worcester & Nashua Railroad Companies, andas trustee of the Merrimac River Savings has also served as delegate from that State tonational Democratic conventions (of 1872, 1876,and 1880) ; as a member of the national Democraticcommittee
