HARKNESS In order that a clear understanding may be had of the plans for healthbetterment in Greater Birmingham, a brief explanation of our health ma-chinery should be made. The laws of Alabama provide each county in the state with a Board ofHealth, which is composed of physicians. This Board of Health, has as itsexecutives, the health officer and his assistants, for the county at large, also. St. Vincents Hospital for each incorporated city or town in the county. Through these executives,known collectively in Birmingham as the city health department. The Board of Health is expected to care for the health interests of thecitizens. Before taking up in detail the duties of the health department ofGreater Birmingham, some general considerations may be disposed is between 550 and 650 feet above sea level, its citizens are notsubjected to extremes of temperature either in summer or winter; the sur-face is sufficiently rolling to give good natural drainage. We will now con-sider in detail the more important features in public health work. The fol- 53 lowing are some of the most important matters that engage the attention ofthe health department in daily routine. 1st. Supervision of communicable diseases. 2d.
