His unblemishedcharacter, his commanding abilities, his unquestionedpatriotism, and the distinguished positions which hehad occupied in the government of our country, se-cured to him not only the homage of his party, butthe respect ot the whole community. It was on the4th of March, 1841, that Mr. Van Buren retired fromthe presidency. From his fine estate at still exerted a powerful influence upon the politicsof the country. From this time until his death, onthe 24th of July, 1862, at the age of eighty years, heresided at Lindenwald, a gentleman ^^/<=77-\;^,fculture and of wealth: enjoying in a jealtl^V oldage, probably far more happiness than he had befo:-expe ie-ued amid the stormy scenes of his active life. yCa.
