Gemini observatory dome. View of the dome of the unfinished Gemini observatory near the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, USA. In the background (lower left) is the white dome of the Canada-France- Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). The Gemini observatory is being built under the supervision of the United States National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO). It will eventually house a telescope with an 8 metre diameter mirror for observations in the thermal infrared range. A twin observatory is being built at Cerro Pathon, Chile, to view the southern celestial hemisphere. Photographed in 1998.
