The last fourmonths have beenlived with the flow-ers, but nothing hasbeen said so far of thejoy these natures gar-dens brought into thehome; of the greatblue bowls of daisies and buttercups and bru-nella, the jars of sweet fern and bay, the greatbrown crocks of stately thistles, or the smallerglass dishes, tumblers and vases of the daintylittle violets, bluets, arbutus, and other delicateblossoms of May and June; the rare orchids,or the fine large specimens of royal cinnamon ferns and interrupted fern, 111. 112 BOGGY SOLITUDES OF NANTUCKET It was the latter part of June that the firstfern dishes, which have been so beautiful andrefreshing all summer, were started. Inthese are still growing the crested bucklerfern, the snake, sensitive, net-veined chain,Clintons wood fern, and many little marshferns. Sundew, both round and thread-leaved,have blossomed in them all summer. Thewild strawberry has had both blossom andfruit in one—also the cranberry—and now theleaves are tinged with blood red. Thecinquefoil, with its yellow blossom, trailedover soft velvety mosses, both green andgray. In one a calopogon and in another somepogonia filled the air with fragrance. Bed-straw and several other little volunteers,among them milkwort, w^ere and checkerberry vines found littlecorners, and some dainty white violets, withtheir faint sweet scent, bloomed for a month;also arethusa and false Solomons seal.
