Victor bronze was formerly owned and manufactured by theVictor Metals Company of Massachusetts, and their businesswas practically confined to marine work; the Vanadium MetalsCompany of Pittsburgh, Pa., who have purchased the process, etc., have inaugurated an aggressive campaign for railroad work, and expect to make the latter their special field. Emery wheels run wet are usually operated at a speed of 4,000ft. per minute, which is about as fast as they can run and keepthe water on the surface of the wheel. 34 AMERICAN ENGINEER AND RAILROAD A BELT DRIVING A FRICTION SAW AND OPERATING SUCCESSFULLY IN EXCEPTIONALLY SEVERE SERVICE. REMARKABLE BELT PERFORMANCE One of the most interesting examples of belt transmission tobe found in this is at the Passaic Steel Company, Pater-son, N. J. Under a barn-like shed at one side of the plant is agreat friction saw that has teeth 2Y, inches apart; the teeth areno more than slight indentations. This saw runs at such a highspeed that it will cut in two a Bessemer steel rail in just elevenseconds. It is also used to cut 20-inch I-beams. It was a most difficult problem to find a belt that would notonly transmit more than 200 horsepower, but which would holdup when going at a rate of more than a mile and a half perminute. The saw is operated by a 250 horsepower motor. Thedriving pulley of the motor is 44 inches in diameter, and thedriven pulley is 14 inches in diameter. To operate the saw atsufficient speed it is necessary for the driven p
