The smartly-dressed congregation in the sunshine outside a Pentecostal Holiness church, Pretoria, Gauteng Province, South Africa in 1962. The brick-built church has echoes of Dutch architecture in its gable end. A VW Beetle is parked outside. Pretoria is the administrative capital of the Republic of South Africa. The photographer was especially interested in Christian church, education and missionary projects at that time. This image is from an old amateur 35mm colour transparency.

It was founded in 1855 by Marthinus, son of Andries Pretorius, the Boer statesman for whom the city was named – it became the capital of the Transvaal in 1860. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1960s photograph.
