2MASS galaxies, all-sky infrared image. This projection shows the distribution of galaxies over the entire sky, from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS, 1997-2001). Over million galaxies were recorded by the 2MASS All-Sky Survey Extended Source Catalog, more than half never catalogued before. The colours represent three wavelengths of infrared light: blue at microns, green at microns, and red at microns. Galactic clusters, superclusters, and streamers make up the large-scale structure of the local universe. The blue overlay (middle and around edges) is the stars from our own Milky Way galaxy.
