This method of ])roce(hire obviates the construction oflloating- docks, which would ha\e to be connected 1)\ means ofsome flexible medium with a stationary shore construction. From .Vnchorage the road will run about 25 miles to thecast when the head of Knik Arm will be reached and crossed.()n the north shore of the Arm a branch line will be built tothe coal fields on the Matanuska River; the point where the^latanuska line leaves tlie main line will be known as AlatanuskaJunction. From the Junction the road will ])roceed northwest-ward to the valle\- of the Susitna River; it will then turn tothe north, following the Susitna to a point south of Broad Passwhen it will cross the Susitna and enter Broad Pass. FromBroad Pass the line will extend to Fairlianks in a northeasterlydirection and at a moderate Ccal Camp on Chickaloon Creak—Probable Terminal of Railway upthe Matanuska River. It is claimerl that the jjrade of the road between Sewardand the Matanuska coal fields will be low, per cent, whilefor the whole line it will be probablv nearer 2 per cent. In order to reduce the expense of maintenance and alsopermit much, heavier loads to be hauled it has been proposedto put a line through Aloose Pass. This route has a maximumelevation of 1330 feet, somewhat higher than the second sum- 307 mit, but owing to the fact that less rock work would be requiredand there would be no danger of rock and snow slides, it isconsidered much more desirable than the present one. Further, the approach to the pass on both sides is fairly gradual, but thechief disadvantage is that after the divide has been passedTurnagain Arm would have to be crossed on a trestle or gonearound by a long detour, which might overbalance the advantageof construction through Moose Pass.
