Male and female flowers of the common alder, alder glutinosa. The long yellow catkins are male and the small red flowers are female. These will ultimately develop in small cones bearing seeds. The alder is a monoecious tree having male and female flowers growing on the same tree, the female flowers being pollinated by wind. This tree was growing on the banks of a river and the flowers photogrphed in a studio. North Dorset England UK GB
