Empress Eugenie. .A. desirable old variety, which is perlectly hardy, forming shrubby plants, producing heads of light pink flowers, which, on fully developing to a purplish hue. Otaksa. A Japanese variety, producing immense heads c pink flowers. This is the variety so extensively used fc Eis'er decoration. Hortensis Mariesii. A most distinct variety, re- markable for the very large size of its sterile flowers, often 3 inches across, and which are arranged on the ouer edge of thetruss ; in color light pink'on open- in,;, changing to a pure mauve. Hortensis Variegata. While the flowers oi this variety are not so showy a,s in the type, the foliage is handsomely variegated, the ground color being of a creamy white, with irregular blotches and markings of light and dark green in the centre, making it an attractive plant at all times, and a pleasing object either as a pot plant or when planted in the open.
