At the time of desicfnino- these bridges it wasimpracticable to make sufficient determinations aboutfuture rapid-transit subways to plan combination struc-tures for both purposes, and the bridges in questionnow provide for a solid earth filling about twenty feetin depth and a loading of about 3,500 pounds persquare foot. In the future some of this earth loading may beremoved when constructing subways, but to retain thefilling until then it has been necessary to constructheavy concrete retaining walls upon the steel. The Eighth Avenue bridge best illustrates themain features, though the skew and longer spans ofthe Sev
