Water droplets on leaf of Alchemilla vulgaris showing surface tension. Composite
Surface tension is the property of liquids arising from unbalanced molecular cohesive forces at or near a surface, as a result of which the surface tends to contract and has properties resembling those of a stretched elastic membrane. The strength depends on the forces of attraction among the particles of the liquid itself and with the particles of the gas, liquid or solid with which it comes in contact. It results in spherical drops of liquid, as the liquid tends to reduce or minimise its exposed surface to the smallest possible area.
