Edin's Hall Iron Age broch, Scottish Borders, UK, looking NNW over the ramparts of an earlier oval fort measuring 134m x 74m. The broch is built in the NW corner of the earlier fort & during the Roman period (late C2ndAD) an open settlement (undefended village) occupied the E half of the fort. The circular broch courtyard is 17m in diameter within drystone walls some 5m thick & up to 2m high. The entrance passage has door checks & guard cells on each side. Within the walls there are chambers, galleries & a stairway which once lead up to the wall head. A lowland broch is something of a mystery, especially built in the territory of the Votadini who were 'at peace' with the Romans. Situated on the lower NE slopes of Cockburn Law overlooking the valley of the Whiteadder Water. Folklore connects the site with the Scandinavian god Odin (Woden, Wotan) & the Scottish fairytale of the giant Red Etin (Jötun)
