This study's recoveries show that canvasbacks from breeding grounds in Alaska and Canada winter in California. Recoveries from Alaska are scarce (one), but recoveries from the Washington and Oregon coast suggest they come down the coast. Recoveries from canvasbacks banded in Alaska, although few, suggest the principal migration route extends through southern British Columbia, Washington, Oregon to northern California (Stewart, Geis, and Evans 1958;.
