Thames Barrier at dusk. The Thames Barrier is the largest tidal river barrier in the world. It has 9 piers and 10 gates. The six gates at the centre of the river are each 61 metres wide and 20 metres high. They are of a \D\"-shaped cross-section, and are rotated upward from their rest position on the river bed to block the river. The barrier is intended to provide protection for London against tidal flooding, particularly where spring tides could combine with weather depressions to give excessively high water levels. The Thames Barrier was officially opened on 8 May 1984, and cost about #500 million to build."
