A manual on extracting teeth, founded on the anatomy of the parts involved in the operation; the kinds and proper construction of the instruments to be used; the accidents liable to occur from the operation, and the proper remedies to retrieve such accidents . The upper edge of the jaw issurmounted by the alveolar processes and cells, cor-responding, like those in the upper jaw, in number, 24 ANATOMY OF THE JAWS AND TEETH. size, form and depth, to the number, size, form andlength of the roots of the teeth which they contain and Fig. support. These processes are wanting, mostly, infoetal life, and early infancy; and in old age, or atan earlier period, with the loss of the teeth, aregradually wasted or absorbed away ; coming withthe teeth and departing with them. The anterior alveolar processes are thinner andhigher than the posterior ; the roots of the wisdomteeth being almost entirely imbedded in the body ofthe bone, or having at most, a very short and thickprocess; a matter of great practical importance, aswe shall see, when treating of the extraction of thelower wisdom teeth. The ramus of the jaw is a strong, oblong-shaped,process, rising from the posterior portion of each side ANATOMY OF THE JAWS AND TEETH. 25 of the body, forming an angle more or less obtuse, according to the time of life of the individual.
