Mary Anning, largely overlooked in her day, is now famous as one of the foremost field palaeontologists of the early 19th century. She searched the local cliffs to find specimens to wealthy or institutional clients such as William Buckland or Conybeare. She is credited as discovering the first described ichthyosaur fossil and complete plesiosaur among others. Despite that she often fell on hard times when the cliffs were not yielding good specimens. to sell to her wealthy and institutional clients.
