Another method is to cover the plants with boards or slats. In three or four weeks they will be blanched. Green Curled Winter. Standard sort for fall and winter crop; when tied up this variety blanches splen- didly. Pkt., 5 cts.; oz., 15 cts.; \ lb., 40 cts. White Curled {Self-blanching). Leaves pale green, grows to a large size, always crisp and very tender. Pkt., 5 cts.; oz., 20 cts.; \ lb., 50 cts. Broad-leaved Batavian (Escarolle). Leaves broad, light green, nearly plain, used in stews and soups, but if the leaves are tied up it will blanch up nicely and can be used as a salad. Pkt., 5 cts.; oz., 15 cts., \ lb., 40 cts. Dreer's Giant Fringed. (See cut.) A strong- growing variety with a large white heart and broad stems; good for fall and winter.
