SAN DIEGO (June 16, 2022) – Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman Barryon Starks delivers a speech during a Juneteenth presented by the diversity committee aboard amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), June 16. On June 17, 2021 president Joe Biden signed legislation to establish June 19 as a federal holiday. A celebration of freedom, Juneteenth recognizes how far the nation and the Navy have come. Makin Island is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship homeported in San Diego.
