Marion Eppley (1883-1960), US physical chemist. Eppley was awarded his doctorate from Princeton in 1919. During the First World War, Eppley had founded the Eppley Laboratory in Newport, Rhode Island, to produce standard cells (batteries) that were needed to calibrate scientific equipment. Eppley's career was spent on research on standard cells and on the measurement of thermal and solar radiation. During the Second World War, Eppley served in the Pacific Fleet as a captain, receiving the Legion of Merit for his wartime work. In 1947, he founded the Eppley Foundation for Research to support advanced scientific research.
