From thegate roof the graceful vine runs on up the balconyover the childrens play place and from there on upto the roof of the house. By each stone gate-postrises a thin young cypress. The open spaces on the terrace covered with finely-broken red stone and soil are kept clean of fallenleaves and fruit byBeppi with fagotbroom and basket. Inthese clear spaces, inlittle intimate groupsor ringed round thecircular beds andranged on the stonesteps of the housedoors, are changingcompanies of pottedplants; blossoming cal-las in April, cinerariasin May, carnations inJune, geraniums inJuly, and chrysanthe-mums in the autumn; while along the coping of theretaining wall that holds the terrace above the lower. In little intimate groupsare changing companies ofpotted plants. 54 Our Garden garden are more of these pots, some of them ofunusual shape, tall and vase-like. Thenwe arranged the many and various pots on and byside of and under all these draperies. It was likea Carpaccio picture. It is on the wall coping and in the dry open placesof the terraces that the spotted green, beady-eyed, long-tailed little wall-lizards play. Thisplay is little fun for the beetles and flies. I havemade our garden, so far in my account of it, e
