Its con-tiguity to the ocean and the richness andfertility of the soil render the conditions ideal for appleculture. The fruit grows to such astonishing size and at-tains such surpassing flavor that it is largely exported. Inall there are 1,000,000 trees growing on 812,000 acres ofland and 100,000,000 pounds of the fruit are shipped everyyear. The culture of the apple has been extremely profit-able. The orchardists reaped large returns until the intro-duction of the codlin moth from the east, when the orchardsbecame badly infected with the devastating insect. Theattempts of growers to extirpate the pest proved futile andthe aid of the general government and the University ofCalifornia was solicited and obtained. The life history of the moth under California environ-ments was carefully investigated
